The Essl Museum contains undoubtedly the most important collection of Austrian post-war art and present art. About 4.500 works of contemporary Austrian and international artists are presented in the new museum, on 3.200 m2 a very broadminded exhibition space a sculpture garden, a cafe and a Bookshop accommodateds.
With its 6,000 exhibits the Essl Museum today offers an excellent overview of Austrian painting since 1945, placing it in an international context. Whenever possible the collectors acquired a number of works by those artists that were of decisive importance for Austrian art. Collecting in depth was always an essential idea and the artists' development in the course of their oeuvre was to be shown.
